Palm Springs History and Architecture
Palm Springs History
The Palm Springs charm has been featured in films, television, movies, and books and it all begins along Palm Canyon Drive that begins at the "Welcome to Palm Springs" sign just north of the Visitors Center located in the MidCentury Modern, architecturally significant structure that Albert Frey first built as a gas station and ending just west of the famed Parker Hotel, choice of the Hollywood elite since it was first built by cowboy star Gene Autry.
For many Palm Springs aficionados the best way to begin is to find out more about the history of the city that began thousands of years ago as the home of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. Today, the tribe is both the keeper of the history and traditions of Palm Springs as well as active participants in the future and in the tourism industry that has made the city famous world-wide. Right on Palm Canyon Drive itself can be found the Village Green Heritage Center, home to the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum as well as two 19th-century pioneer homes housing the Palm Springs Historical Society. The McCallum Adobe, the oldest remaining building in Palm Springs, was built in 1884 for John McCallum, the first permanent white settler. The McCallum Adobe exhibits an extensive collection of photographs, paintings, clothing, tools, books, and Indian-ware from the earliest days of Palm Springs.
Palm Springs Architecture
The study of architecture continues via bus or, in a combination of past and present, on Segway. PS Modern Tours whisks visitors through a three-hour tour of the architecturally significant city. Named one of the National Trust's ?Dozen Distinctive Destinations? in 2006, Richard More, president, National Trust for Historic Preservation, had this to say, "Palm Springs contains an astonishing wealth of architectural styles and building types reflective of the City's 100-year history as a desert resort."
